The New 2025 Toyota 4Runner: A Game Changer in the SUV Market

Toyota Motor has unveiled the new 2025 4Runner SUV after nearly 15 years, marking a significant milestone in the automaker’s lineup of trucks and SUVs. This latest model boasts a fresh new look, reminiscent of the recently redesigned Toyota Tacoma pickup, and comes with exciting updates such as the introduction of a hybrid engine for the first time. Additionally, Toyota is introducing two new high-end trims, namely the “Platinum” and “Trailhunter” models, to cater to different consumer preferences and demands.

Toyota’s group vice president and general manager, Dave Christ, expressed his enthusiasm for the new 4Runner, emphasizing its versatility and capability that complement the existing Toyota truck family. With over 3 million units of the 4Runner sold in the past four decades, the sixth-generation model aims to combine a stylish appearance with enhanced features while retaining the rugged charm that has made the 4Runner an adventure icon beloved by customers.

Often referred to as the “five brothers,” Toyota’s truck family consists of the Tacoma and Tundra pickup trucks, as well as the 4Runner, Land Cruiser, and Sequoia SUVs. The 4Runner is the final member of this family to undergo a redesign, sharing the same global truck platform introduced with the Land Cruiser and Tundra in 2021. The forthcoming 2025 4Runner’s pricing details will be disclosed closer to its release date, with the current model’s starting prices ranging from approximately $41,000 to over $55,000.

While Toyota has built a reputation for its fuel-efficient vehicles like the Prius, the larger “brother” SUVs, including the 4Runner, have historically lagged behind in terms of fuel economy, achieving 17 mpg combined or lower according to federal ratings. With the new 4Runner, Toyota aims to enhance its fuel efficiency, with specific miles per gallon ratings set to be revealed as the vehicle hits showrooms in the fall. The recent redesigns of Toyota’s other trucks and SUVs have garnered praise for their improved fuel economy, aligning with the company’s commitment to balancing its portfolio with eco-friendly options.

The 2025 Toyota 4Runner will be available in nine different models, ranging from the basic SR5 to the premium Trailhunter and Platinum editions. The Trailhunter model is tailored for off-road enthusiasts, featuring enhanced styling and equipment such as rock rails and high-strength steel skid plates. On the other hand, the Platinum model prioritizes luxury and convenience, catering to customers seeking a more refined driving experience.

Production of the new 4Runner is underway at Toyota’s Tahara plant in Japan, reflecting the company’s commitment to delivering high-quality vehicles that meet the diverse needs of consumers. With a turbocharged 2.4-liter engine and a 48-horsepower electric motor integrated into the eight-speed transmission, the 2025 4Runner can generate up to 326 horsepower and 465 foot-pounds of torque. This hybrid engine option is complemented by a standard turbocharged 2.4-liter engine producing 278 horsepower and 317 foot-pounds of torque, offering drivers a blend of power, efficiency, and performance.

The 2025 Toyota 4Runner represents a significant leap forward in the SUV market, combining innovative technology, versatile design, and robust features to redefine the driving experience for adventure seekers and daily commuters alike. With its modern redesign, hybrid engine option, and diverse model lineup, the new 4Runner sets a new standard for excellence in the automotive industry, solidifying Toyota’s reputation as a trailblazer in the SUV segment.
