Rivian Automotive recently announced significant changes to its all-electric R1 pickup and SUV models, set to be released in 2025. The company has made improvements in various aspects including range, performance, and computing power, with the assistance of Nvidia chips. The CEO, RJ Scaringe, emphasized the evolution of their flagship R1 vehicles, boasting about the enhanced quality and performance without compromise.
One of the most notable upgrades in the new vehicles is the computing power, which Rivian claims delivers 10 times more performance than the previous system. The introduction of dual Nvidia DRIVE Orin processors is set to power the “Autonomy Compute Module,” and enable driver-assistant features. Additionally, a “premium version” with advanced capabilities such as hands-free driving will be available, although Rivian emphasizes that drivers must remain attentive to the road at all times.
The revamped R1S and R1T models aim to drive sales for Rivian ahead of the launch of the less-expensive “R2” models, which are expected to cater to a wider market segment with a starting price of about $45,000. These lower-priced vehicles are crucial for Rivian’s expansion plans, especially considering the slower sales of their current models amidst a sluggish market for electric vehicles. To streamline operations and cut costs, the company has made strategic decisions such as reducing headcount, retooling manufacturing plants, and pausing construction on a new facility to optimize capital spending.
Despite the innovative upgrades and strategic restructuring, Rivian has been facing financial challenges, evident from reported losses of $1.45 billion in the first quarter of the year. The stock price has also taken a hit, reflecting investor concerns over the company’s cash burn rate. However, the immediate focus remains on the launch of the 2025 R1S and R1T models, with deliveries commencing shortly.
The new models will offer various configurations including dual, tri, and quad motors, along with battery packs of different capacities. The top ranges for these models are between 270 miles, 330 miles, and 420 miles respectively. Pricing details for the second-generation R1S SUV have been released, indicating a starting price of $75,900 and going up to around $106,000 for the top-end trimotor models. The R1T pricing remains at $69,900 with a potential increase for trimotor configurations. Specific pricing for the quad-motor vehicles is yet to be announced.
The new battery packs will continue to use a “2170 cylindrical cell,” but with updated pack enclosures to simplify manufacturing and reduce weight. The tri- and quad-motor vehicles will feature new Rivian-made drive units, with the top-end quad offering impressive horsepower and torque figures, accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in just 2.5 seconds. Additionally, the vehicles will boast more luxurious interiors and a redesigned software interface, along with improved charging times of up to 140 miles in approximately 20 minutes.
Rivian’s reengineering of the R1 series vehicles represents a significant leap forward in terms of technology, performance, and design. Despite facing financial challenges, the company aims to capture a broader market segment with the launch of the new models and subsequently drive growth and profitability in the coming years. The innovative features and improvements in the R1S and R1T models demonstrate Rivian’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of electric vehicle technology while offering customers an unparalleled driving experience.
