Michigan’s Search for a New Football Head Coach: Interviewing Sherrone Moore

Michigan’s football program is in a state of transition as they search for a new head coach to replace Jim Harbaugh, who was recently named the head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers. Harbaugh’s departure comes after leading the Wolverines to a national championship, their first since 1997. In response to Harbaugh’s exit, Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel expressed the program’s commitment to quickly hiring a new head coach while also aiming to retain their current staff and team.

All eyes are now on Sherrone Moore, Michigan’s offensive coordinator and offensive line coach, as the primary candidate for the head coaching position. Multiple sources have indicated that Michigan is focused on Moore and is expected to offer him the job, pending any unforeseen circumstances. Moore has already begun reaching out to potential candidates to join his coaching staff and is scheduled to meet with Michigan officials to discuss the opportunity further.

Moore, 37, has been an integral part of the Michigan football staff for the past six seasons. He initially served as the tight ends coach from 2018 to 2020 before transitioning to the role of offensive line coach in 2021 and 2022. Under his guidance, the Michigan offensive line received the Joe Moore Award for college football’s best O-line in both seasons. In 2023, Moore took on additional responsibilities as offensive coordinator, leading the Wolverines to an undefeated season and a 14th national ranking in scoring offense, at 35.9 points per game. Michigan scored 30 or more points in 12 out of their 15 games.

Notably, Moore has garnered support from Michigan’s players, including All-American offensive lineman Zak Zinter, who took to social media to endorse Moore as the next head coach. Zinter’s unwavering support signifies the positive relationship and respect that Moore has built with the team during his tenure. This support further solidifies Moore’s candidacy and speaks to his ability to connect with and motivate the players.

Acknowledging Jim Harbaugh’s impact on the Michigan football program, both University of Michigan president Santa Ono and athletic director Warde Manuel expressed their appreciation for Harbaugh’s contributions. They highlighted Harbaugh’s success in building a program that consistently contends for Big Ten Championships and national titles. Harbaugh’s legacy as a championship player and coach will forever be remembered in Michigan’s rich football history.

With the departure of Harbaugh, the landscape of college football coaching is undergoing significant changes. Alongside Harbaugh, Alabama’s Nick Saban retiring, and Washington’s Kalen DeBoer leaving for Alabama, three out of the four head coaches from last season’s College Football Playoff will be leading new teams in the upcoming season. Despite these shifts, Michigan remains committed to maintaining their competitive edge and pursuing sustained success as they select a new head coach to lead them into the future.

As Michigan’s search for a new head coach continues, the attention is squarely on Sherrone Moore. The program views Moore as the ideal candidate to take the reins, build on the foundation laid by Harbaugh, and guide the Wolverines to further success. The upcoming meetings and discussions between Moore and Michigan officials hold the key to the future direction of the program. Michigan fans eagerly anticipate the announcement of their new head coach, filled with hope and anticipation for the team’s journey ahead.
