Subsequently, the students were given a cup of candy to taste and evaluate. The results showed that those who watched the sports video consumed more candy than those who viewed the non-physical activity video.

Interestingly, male students tended to indulge in significantly more candy than female students, indicating a possible gender influence on food consumption behavior. Moreover, the type of sport watched – whether easy or difficult – also had a substantial impact on candy intake. Female students who watched videos featuring easy-to-perform sports consumed more candy compared to those who viewed videos of challenging sports. This finding suggests that the perceived ease or difficulty of the activity shown significantly influences food consumption patterns.

The study delved into research on goal motivation to explain these findings. It was found that when individuals feel they are making progress towards a goal, they are more likely to indulge. Watching sports, particularly easy-to-perform ones, can create a sense of vicarious fulfillment of fitness goals. Women, in particular, may be more susceptible to eating more candy after watching such videos due to their heightened concern with weight and dieting goals. The perceived achievement of watching an easy exercise can lead to an increased desire to reward oneself with food.

This knowledge could be leveraged by policymakers and marketers to encourage healthier lifestyle choices. By showcasing a mix of easy and challenging exercises, individuals can be motivated to start with basic activities while maintaining a sense of progress and achievement. It is crucial to avoid giving a false sense of accomplishment as this can lead to overindulgence.
