Will Smith recently reflected on his time working with the German Shepherd named Abbey in the 2007 movie ‘I Am Legend’. Despite some advice against working with animals, Smith praised Abbey as being “a brilliant actress” who even upstaged him in the blockbuster film.
Smith shared his amazement at Abbey’s ability to understand English, describing it as a surreal experience on the latest episode of Hot Ones. He expressed his desire to adopt Abbey but unfortunately, she had to stay with her family as she was the breadwinner.
In ‘I Am Legend’, Smith portrayed US Army virologist Robert Neville, the last human survivor in a post-apocalyptic New York overrun by mutants. His only companion is his loyal dog Sam, played by Abbey. Smith recalled a poignant scene where Sam becomes infected, praising Abbey’s acting skills and training.
Earlier this year, Will Smith paid tribute to Abbey on National Pet Day with a heartwarming video montage of their time together. In the caption, Smith referred to Abbey as “the goodness girl”, showcasing his deep bond with the talented canine co-star.
After the announcement that Will Smith and Michael B. Jordan will co-produce and co-star in a sequel to ‘I Am Legend’, Jordan revealed that the project is still in development. He mentioned that they are working on perfecting the script and expressed his excitement to work with Smith, whom he has admired for a long time.
As Will Smith looks back on his collaboration with Abbey in ‘I Am Legend’, it is evident that their partnership created unforgettable moments both on and off the screen. The bond between a human actor and their animal co-star can truly elevate a film, and in this case, Abbey’s talent left a lasting impression on Smith and audiences alike.
