The Javan tiger, believed to have been extinct for over a century, made a surprising reappearance in the spotlight in 2019. A local resident reported a sighting of a suspected tiger in West Java, which led researchers to investigate further. Footprints, claw marks, and a single strand of hair were discovered at the site of the sighting, sparking curiosity and hope in the hearts of conservationists and wildlife enthusiasts alike.
The discovered hair sample was sent for genetic analysis to Indonesia’s Biology Research Centre for National Research and Innovation (BRIN). The results were compared to the genetics of Sumatran tigers as well as a 1930 museum specimen of a Javan tiger. The findings revealed a 97 percent genetic similarity with the Sumatran tiger, and a 0.3 percent genetic distance from the museum Javan tiger. This led the researchers to conclude that the hair sample belonged to the Javan tiger subspecies (Panthera tigris sondaica).
While the potential rediscovery of the Javan tiger has sparked excitement, it also sheds light on the challenges the species faces. Centuries ago, the Javan tiger roamed freely in forests and thickets, but with rapid habitat loss and human encroachment, their numbers dwindled significantly. Today, Java is one of the most densely populated islands in the world, leaving little room for wildlife to thrive.
