The recent escalation in the conflict between Ukraine and Russia has seen accusations from Russia’s foreign ministry that Ukraine used Western rockets, likely U.S.-made HIMARS, to destroy a bridge over the Seym river in the Kursk region. Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman for the Russian foreign ministry, expressed on the Telegram messaging app that “For the first time, the Kursk region was hit by Western-made rocket launchers, probably American HIMARS.” This attack resulted in the complete destruction of the bridge, leading to the tragic loss of volunteers who were assisting in the evacuation of civilians.
The Advancement of Ukrainian Forces in the Kursk Region
Ukrainian army chief Oleksandr Syrskyi reported that Kyiv’s forces have been advancing between 1 and 3 kilometres in some areas of the Kursk region, marking the progress made 11 days since the start of the incursion into Russia. The Ukrainian government claims to have taken control of 82 settlements across an area of 1,150 square kilometres since August 6. However, it is important to note that there has been no independent verification of the battlefield accounts provided by either side in this conflict.
The United States has declared that it cannot allow Russian President Vladimir Putin to emerge victorious in the conflict initiated in February 2022. The U.S. views the Ukrainian incursion into Russian territory as a protective move that justifies the provision of U.S. weaponry to Ukraine. Despite Russia’s accusations of Western support for Ukraine’s ground offensive and the declaration of a “terrorist invasion” by Kyiv, the U.S. stands by its decision to aid Ukraine in its conflict with Russia.
