Recently, a 10-year-old girl was rushed to the hospital after being viciously attacked by an unregistered XL bully in Belvedere, Balby. The incident occurred in the garden of a house, where the dog aggressively dragged the girl’s head from side to side and bit her neck, resulting in serious injuries. Fortunately, the bleeding was brought under control, and the child is expected to recover without life-threatening consequences.
According to UK law, owners of XL bullys are required to register their dogs and adhere to specific regulations due to the breed being banned in February. In light of this incident, a 37-year-old woman was arrested for possession of a banned breed of dog, allowing a dog to be dangerously out of control, and child neglect. Additionally, two teenagers were also apprehended for similar offenses. Although all three have been released from custody, the dog remains in police kennels.
Chief Inspector Emma Cheney emphasized the importance of responsible pet ownership to prevent such incidents from occurring. She cautioned owners to understand their dogs’ behavior, follow safety protocols, and ensure the well-being of everyone around them. Cheney highlighted the potentially fatal consequences that could have resulted from the attack and urged owners not to underestimate the risks associated with owning powerful dog breeds.
In response to this incident, South Yorkshire Police issued safety guidelines for dog owners, such as walking pets on a lead in public areas, staying on designated footpaths, supervising the animal at all times, and being mindful that not everyone is comfortable around dogs. These precautions are essential in preventing dog-related injuries and fatalities, as demonstrated by the recent tragic incident in Coventry where a woman lost her life after being attacked by a pet dog. West Midlands Police clarified that the dog involved was not a banned breed but still resulted in a tragic outcome.
