Europe’s climate monitoring agency recently reported that March experienced the highest temperatures on record, continuing a trend of historic heat for the tenth consecutive month. The increase in sea surface temperatures also reached unprecedented levels, indicating a concerning shift in global climate patterns.
The data collected by the EU’s Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) revealed that March 2024 was 1.68 degrees Celsius hotter than the average March temperatures from 1850-1900, the benchmark for the pre-industrial era. This marks a significant deviation from historical norms and highlights the urgent need for decisive action to curb global warming.
Regions across the globe, from Africa to Antarctica, experienced above-average temperatures in March, underscoring the widespread impact of climate change. The rise in temperatures not only broke monthly records but also culminated in the hottest 12-month period on record, surpassing pre-industrial averages by 1.58 degrees Celsius.
While the 1.5-degree Celsius warming limit set in the Paris Agreement has not been breached on an annual basis, the consistent trend of rising temperatures puts the world dangerously close to surpassing this critical threshold. With experts warning that the global temperature is likely to exceed 1.5 degrees Celsius in the early 2030s, urgent action is needed to avoid irreversible damage to the planet.
The unprecedented increase in global ocean surface temperatures in February and March is a cause for alarm.
