An event that was meant to be a pre-planned “controlled explosion” on an east London film set took a disastrous turn near The O2 arena in Silvertown. The London Fire Brigade reported that the fire, which followed the controlled explosion, quickly spiraled “out of control,” causing significant damage to the surrounding area.
According to the London Fire Brigade, the fire destroyed one van, most of a car, and a lorry (truck) on the film set. Despite the destruction caused by the fire, fortunately, there are no reports of any injuries resulting from the incident. The fire was reported at 7:51 p.m. UTC, and firefighters were able to bring it under control by 9:02 p.m.
Fire crews from Poplar, Millwall, Shadwell, and East Greenwich quickly responded to the scene of the fire near Dock Road and Trinity Buoy Wharf. With 25 firefighters and four fire engines on site, they were able to tame the flames at the open-air yard where the film set was located. The quick response of the emergency crews helped to prevent further damage and ensure the safety of the surrounding area.
Local police force Newham MPS reassured the public through a tweet, stating that the explosions heard near The O2 arena were part of a pre-planned filming event in the Canning Town area. They emphasized that there was no risk to the public despite the unexpected turn of events. It is crucial for authorities to communicate effectively with the public in such situations to prevent panic and confusion.
Videos captured at the scene and shared on social media showed the intense flames and thick smoke billowing from the burning vehicles. One of the trucks engulfed in flames was marked with the words “BBC News World,” leading to initial speculation about the involvement of the news organization. However, BBC News quickly clarified that they had no connection to the incident. As details about the film set impacted by the fire remain unclear, updates are eagerly awaited to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The aftermath of the controlled explosion in east London serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of such events. Despite the best preparations and intentions, unforeseen circumstances can lead to dire consequences. It is essential for emergency response teams to be well-trained and ready to act swiftly in the face of emergencies to mitigate the impact and ensure the safety of everyone involved.
