Ryan Gosling recently shared his thoughts on the Oscars nominations after Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig were snubbed for their work in the film Barbie. While Barbie received a total of eight nominations, including Best Picture and Adapted Screenplay, Gerwig was overlooked in the Best Director category, and Robbie did not receive a nod in the lead acting category.
In a statement, Gosling expressed his gratitude for being nominated by his colleagues alongside such remarkable artists in a year filled with great films. However, he also took the opportunity to express his disappointment in the academy’s omission of Gerwig and Robbie, stating, “To say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement.”
Gosling further acknowledged the crucial role both Gerwig and Robbie played in the success of Barbie. He emphasized that without Gerwig and Robbie, there would be no Barbie movie, calling them “the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally-celebrated film.” Gosling recognized their talent, grit, and genius, stating that no recognition would be possible for anyone involved in the film without them.
Despite not receiving a nomination for her acting performance, Robbie still has a chance at winning an Oscar as a producer of the film. She is in the running for the Best Picture category alongside David Herman, Tom Ackerley, and Robbie Brenner. Gosling applauded both Gerwig and Robbie’s work and called for their recognition alongside the other deserving nominees.
Gosling praised the impact of their work, stating that against all odds, they managed to make audiences laugh, break hearts, and push cultural boundaries. He noted that their contributions to the film should not go unnoticed.
As a supporting actor in Barbie, Gosling also received a nomination in the Actor in a Supporting Role category. While expressing his disappointment for his colleagues, he acknowledged the honor and pride he feels for his nomination, stating, “I never thought I’d be saying this, but I’m also incredibly honored and proud that it’s for portraying a plastic doll named Ken.” Gosling humorously highlighted the importance of the Barbie-Ken relationship and acknowledged that without Barbie, there would be no Ken.
Ryan Gosling’s statement reflects a mixture of gratitude, disappointment, and admiration. He is grateful for his own nomination and acknowledges the remarkable talent of his colleagues, Gerwig and Robbie. Gosling calls for their recognition and applauds their contributions to the success and impact of Barbie.
