Qualcomm is rumored to be on the verge of unveiling a new variant of the Snapdragon X series chipset at the Internationale FunkAusstellung Berlin 2024 event. Known as the Snapdragon X Plus X1P-42-100, this chipset is expected to power the next generation of AI PCs, also referred to as Copilot+ PCs. Reports suggest that this new chipset will be capable of delivering an impressive 45 trillion operations per second (TOPS), setting a new benchmark in performance.
Leading laptop manufacturers such as Lenovo, Asus, and Acer have already started listing upcoming models equipped with the Snapdragon X Plus X1P-42-100 chipset. Among these, the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 5 is reported to be the first laptop to feature this cutting-edge processor. The announcement of new AI-enabled laptops incorporating this chipset is anticipated to take place in the final quarter of the year, with potential launches at IFA 2024.
One of the notable changes in the new variant of the Snapdragon X series chipset is the reduction in the number of cores from 10 or 12 to eight cores. Despite this downsizing, the chipset is expected to offer a maximum clock speed of 3.4GHz. However, it is worth mentioning that the GPU benchmark scores of the new chipset might not match up to those of its predecessors, indicating a trade-off between core count and GPU performance.
Lenovo is reportedly gearing up to introduce the first Copilot+ PC featuring the new Snapdragon X series chipset at IFA 2024. The Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 5, spotted on the Amazon Germany website, boasts a 14-inch WUXGA OLED screen and comes in a stylish Grey color variant. With 16GB of RAM and 512GB SSD storage, this laptop is equipped with a 57Wh battery for prolonged usage.
Expansion to Other Devices
Apart from Lenovo, other devices such as the Vivobook S15 and the ProArt PZ13 are expected to incorporate the new Snapdragon X series chipset. The Acer Swift Go 14 is also set to join the lineup of laptops featuring this advanced processor. While these new laptops are set to showcase the power of the Snapdragon X Plus X1P-42-100 chipset, Intel is also preparing to launch its Lunar Lake chipset, promising up to 67 TOPS of performance.
In a bid to maintain its market dominance, Qualcomm emphasizes the importance of performance per watt as a key advantage. Mike Roberts, Vice President & Global Head of Product, Partner, and Technology Marketing at Qualcomm, highlights the significance of balancing performance with battery life. He notes, “Performance is great, but if my battery life stinks, nobody’s going to want to use it.” This focus on efficiency reaffirms Qualcomm’s commitment to being a pioneer in the mobile technology space.
