Recently, there has been a fan theory circulating that James Gunn had always planned to remove Henry Cavill from the DCEU. This theory was based on a quote from actor Nathan Fillion about how he found out he was cast as Green Lantern in the new DC film. Fillion mentioned that he was told about his casting at the premiere party for Suicide Squad, leading fans to believe that Gunn had been working on changing the DCEU since 2021. However, Gunn himself clarified that Fillion misspoke and that the actor actually found out about his casting during the premiere party for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
In response to the fan theory about Cavill being replaced as Superman, Gunn took to social media to debunk the rumors. He expressed confusion over how the theory even made sense, as he had no intentions of replacing Cavill when he initially joined the DC Studios team. Gunn emphasized that when he was hired to write Superman, it was always with the intention of telling a new Superman story. He questioned why he would lie about not planning Cavill’s replacement, especially since it would have been essentially the same thing in the end.
Following the executive shakeup at DC Studios, Gunn and Peter Safran made the decision to reboot the universe, which included recasting Superman. While Cavill did reprise his role as Superman in an end credits scene from Black Adam, it was ultimately decided that a new actor would take on the iconic role. David Corenswet was cast as the new Superman, and filming for the new film is already underway. The cast also includes Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer. The ensemble is rounded out by Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, Sean Gunn, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Isabel Merced, and Fillion.
It is important to separate fact from fiction when it comes to fan theories and rumors about the DCEU. James Gunn has clarified that he did not have any plans to replace Henry Cavill as Superman and that the decision to recast the role was made as part of the larger reboot of the DC universe. As fans eagerly await the new Superman film and other upcoming DC projects, it is crucial to rely on official statements and information rather than jumping to conclusions based on hearsay.
