Recent developments in the case against Rep. Henry Cuellar, D-Texas, have revealed that his former campaign manager and a close associate have agreed to plead guilty and cooperate with the Justice Department’s bribery investigation. Mina Colin Strother and Florencio “Lencho” Rendon signed plea deals in March, signaling potential trouble for Cuellar.
Cuellar and his wife, Imelda, are accused of accepting nearly $600,000 in bribes from foreign entities, including a Mexican bank and an oil and gas company controlled by Azerbaijan. The indictment released by the Justice Department outlines a scheme devised by Cuellar and Rendon back in 2015 to funnel money through a “sham consulting contract” and monthly installment payments to Cuellar’s wife.
Strother and Rendon were both charged with conspiracy to commit money laundering in connection with the scheme. The plan involved making payments to Cuellar’s wife without proper disclosure, masking the true nature of the transactions. If convicted, Rendon could face up to 20 years in prison, while Strother could face up to five years.
Cuellar’s attorney, Chris Flood, expressed confidence in the face of the plea deals, stating that as long as Rendon and Strother tell the truth, there is no cause for concern. Cuellar himself has denied any wrongdoing and affirmed his innocence, claiming that he and his wife have consulted with the House Ethics Committee and are fully cooperating with authorities.
