Litvintchouk also utilized generative AI tools to create business plans by simply stating her goals and letting the bot generate steps to achieve them. The use of AI in her daily operations has been described as “massively instrumental” in her success journey.
Emily Kircher-Morris, a counselor specializing in neurodivergent patients, has witnessed the positive impact of AI tools on her clients with ADHD, even using them herself. While acknowledging that some individuals may have varying levels of comfort with AI technology, she emphasized that it can be a useful tool to engage individuals in tasks that require focus and planning. However, experts like John Mitchell, PhD, caution against replacing traditional treatments for ADHD with AI apps. Instead, AI should be viewed as a complementary tool in a larger toolbox, alongside other strategies like developing organizational skills and medication.
Apart from aiding in business management, AI tools can assist individuals with ADHD in various aspects of their lives. Litvintchouk, a mother of four living in New York City, uses ChatGPT to simplify her grocery shopping experience by generating easy-to-prepare recipes and corresponding grocery lists. Grocery shopping can be a daunting task for individuals with ADHD due to the planning and organization involved, making AI tools like ChatGPT valuable assets. Litvintchouk further extended her knowledge by creating informative TikTok videos about different AI tools she uses to manage her ADHD challenges, aiming to educate and empower others facing similar struggles.
Generative AI tools are effective in breaking down complex tasks into manageable steps, offering personalized advice, and improving productivity. For instance, software engineer Bram de Buyser developed Goblin.tools to assist his neurodivergent friends, with features like the “magic to-do” list that breaks down tasks into smaller, actionable items. While these tools are not intended to serve as a cure for ADHD, they provide much-needed support and guidance during daily routines, easing the burden on individuals with ADHD.
Despite the promising benefits of AI in managing ADHD, there are certain challenges and ethical concerns that need to be addressed. Russell Fulmer, PhD, highlights that research on AI and ADHD remains inconclusive, indicating that AI solutions may not be universally effective, particularly for marginalized groups like people of color with ADHD. Instances of racist and biased responses from AI chatbots raise concerns about the inclusivity and cultural sensitivity of these technologies.
Valese Jones, a publicist and individual diagnosed with ADHD, shared her experience of using AI bots for email management and proofreading, noting that the responses sometimes fail to capture her unique identity as a Black woman with a southern dialect. The limitations of AI in understanding diverse cultural nuances and communication styles underscore the importance of ensuring that these tools are inclusive and respectful of users’ individuality.
Looking ahead, the future of AI chatbots evolving into personal assistants raises privacy implications. While the convenience of having a virtual assistant that is always available is appealing, users must be vigilant about sharing personal information and granting access to sensitive data. Bram de Buyser warns that entrusting AI with access to emails, calendars, and personal correspondence entails the risk of privacy breaches and potential exploitation of personal data.
