According to Nielsen’s 2023 State of Play report, the average streaming customer spends over 10 minutes searching for options every time they access their streaming services. This struggle to find something that captures their attention is a common issue faced by many, given the vast catalog of movies and TV shows available on most streaming platforms. By leveraging AI capabilities in its search feature, Amazon aims to address this problem and streamline the content discovery process for users.
With the latest AI-powered update, Amazon Fire TV users can now perform complex search queries such as “Show me psychological thrillers with surprise endings.” This level of specificity is made possible by one of Amazon’s proprietary large language models, although the company has not disclosed which one. Users will now be able to search for content based on topics, genres, plots, characters, actors, and even quotes, ensuring that they find exactly what they are looking for with ease.
Despite the addition of AI capabilities, the appearance of the search feature remains unchanged. However, users with Fire TV devices running Fire OS 6 or later will enjoy a more seamless and intuitive search experience. Results from Prime Video and other subscription libraries, such as Netflix and Disney+ Hotstar, will be included in the search results, ensuring that users only see content that is accessible to them for free. Additionally, the AI search feature is Alexa-supported, allowing users to search for content recommendations using voice commands.
The AI search feature is currently being rolled out to users in the US in English on select Fire TV devices, with a broader rollout planned for all eligible devices in the coming weeks. While Amazon has not provided details on a global release or support for additional languages, the introduction of this feature marks a significant step towards enhancing the content discovery experience for Fire TV users worldwide.
