Filmmaker Alejandro Monteverde, renowned for his directorial work on the critically acclaimed film Sound Of Freedom, is back with his latest masterpiece, Cabrini. This highly anticipated feature highlights the true story of an immigrant woman who defied all odds to build a “worldwide empire of hope” in late 1800s New York City.
Cabrini revolves around the extraordinary life of Mother Francesca Cabrini, a woman dedicated to fighting for the equality, health, and happiness of immigrant orphans. After relocating to Five Points in New York City, Cabrini finds herself in a relentless battle against the government, the church, and widespread bigotry as she champions the marginalized individuals in society. With incredible resilience, she builds an empire of hope, including the establishment of a worldwide hospital system.
The film boasts a star-studded cast, with John Lithgow and David Morse taking on prominent roles alongside the talented Italian actress Cristiana Dell’Anna, who portrays the remarkable Mother Francesca Cabrini. Known as one of the most influential individuals at the turn of the 20th century, Cabrini holds the honor of being the first American female to be sainted by the Catholic Church and is recognized as the Patron Saint of the Immigrant.
Born near Milan, Italy in 1850, Cabrini faced numerous obstacles from a young age. Despite being told she wouldn’t survive into adulthood, she defied expectations and co-founded the Institute of the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in 1880. In 1889, Cabrini and her fellow sisters embarked on a journey to New York City, assisting Italian immigrants as they navigated their new lives. Amidst the chaos and poverty, Cabrini and her companions established schools, orphanages, hospitals, and religious classes throughout the United States.
Cabrini’s impact extended far beyond her lifetime. In 1917, she passed away in Chicago, leaving behind a profound mark on history. Her tireless efforts were recognized by Pope Pius XII, who canonized her as a saint in 1946 and declared her the Patroness of Immigrants in 1950. Today, the institute she founded continues to fulfill diverse roles, with dedicated individuals serving as educators, nurses, social workers, administrators, and board members worldwide.
Cabrini is set to make its debut at the European Film Market on February 19 and 20 before hitting cinemas worldwide on March 8. The film, distributed by Angel Studios, is a testament to Monteverde’s exceptional storytelling ability. Produced by Leo Severino and Jonathan Sanger, with J. Eustace Wolfington and Francesca Cabrini serving as executive producers, Cabrini promises to captivate audiences with its powerful narrative, stunning visuals, and outstanding performances.
