The Metropolitan Police has issued a statement urging the public to come forward with any information that could help prevent further violence at this year’s Notting Hill Carnival. The annual event in west London, which celebrates Caribbean culture, was marred by unacceptable violence over the weekend, with three people being stabbed. One of the victims, a 32-year-old woman who was attending with her young child on what was supposed to be a family-friendly day, remains in critical condition at the hospital. Another man, 29 years old, is also hospitalized but in a non-life threatening condition, while a 24-year-old man with injuries has already discharged himself.
Recent Arrests and Incidents
The police made a total of 103 arrests on Sunday alone for various offenses including violence, robbery, sexual offenses, drug offenses, and possession of offensive weapons. In addition, 18 officers were assaulted during the event. The violence continued into Monday with another person being injured in a stabbing, leading to the arrest of 145 individuals on suspicion of crimes ranging from possession of a firearm to drug offenses and theft. A man wanted for attempted murder was also apprehended at the carnival.
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Ade Adelekan, who is leading the policing operation, expressed frustration over the recurring violence at the carnival. He emphasized the need for the community to stand up against violence and help maintain the true spirit of the event. Adelekan highlighted the responsibility of all attendees to speak out against the violence that has been overshadowing the celebration for years. He called on anyone with information about the recent stabbings or potential plans for more violence to come forward, stressing that sharing information could potentially save lives.
