The Milken Institute recently released its Global Opportunity Index (GOI) report, showcasing investors’ favorite destinations around the world. Surprisingly, four out of the top five countries on the list are located in Europe. Denmark, in particular, claimed the top spot this year, excelling in various aspects such as business perception and economic fundamentals. The index considers 100 indicators across five categories, including business perception, economic fundamentals, financial services, institutional framework, and international standards and policy. Following Denmark on the list are Sweden, Finland, United States, and United Kingdom.
The United States saw a significant improvement in its ranking this year, moving up to the fourth position overall. The country scored highest in the institutional framework category, which evaluates the protection offered to investors’ rights and assets. Additionally, the U.S. ranked fifth in financial services, assessing the accessibility and efficiency of the financial system. This positive shift reflects the country’s ongoing efforts to create a conducive environment for investment.
While Europe dominates the top spots, Asia’s emerging and developing economies are also gaining traction among investors. These regions attracted more than half of the funds flowing into emerging and developing countries between 2018 and 2022. Malaysia, in particular, emerged as a favorite among investors, ranking 27th globally. The country boasts the best investment conditions in Asia and performs well in institutional frameworks, highlighting strong investor rights.
Despite the growth in Asia’s investment appeal, tensions between the U.S. and China have impacted capital inflows to the region. In 2022, inflows to Asian emerging and developing economies decreased by 75.4%, signaling the impact of geopolitical tensions on investor confidence. China, the world’s second-largest economy, fell to the 39th position on the index. While it continues to attract significant capital inflows, recent geopolitical issues have raised concerns among investors.
The Global Opportunity Index ranks several Asian countries based on their attractiveness to investors. Malaysia, Thailand, China, Indonesia, and Vietnam are among the top E&D Asian countries on the list. Singapore emerged as the top Asian destination for investors, securing the 14th position globally. Hong Kong and Japan also garnered favorable rankings, standing at 15th and 16th place in Asia, respectively.
The Global Opportunity Index report sheds light on the evolving landscape of investment opportunities around the world. While Europe remains a favored destination for investors, Asia’s emerging and developing economies are also gaining prominence. The rankings reflect the shifting dynamics of global investment flows and the impact of geopolitical tensions on investor sentiment. As countries continue to enhance their business environments and regulatory frameworks, the competition for investment capital is expected to intensify in the coming years.
