Recently, the highest sea cliffs in England revealed a remarkable discovery – the oldest fossilized forest ever found on Earth. Dating back 390 million years, this long-lost ecosystem comprised palm-like trees known as Calamophytons. Surprisingly, these trees are even older than the previous record holder found in New York State. The red sandstone rock face in southwest England where the imprints of logs, roots, and twigs were found was once thought to be devoid of trace fossils. However, further investigation proved that it offers a unique glimpse into life during the Devonian Period.
During the Devonian Period, when sea levels dropped dramatically to create the supercontinents of Gondwana and Euramerica, primitive plants and animals quickly adapted to the changing environment. The Calamophyton trees found in Somerset near Minehead were among the first to colonize the coastal regions of these continents. Unlike modern trees, these ancient trees lacked roots, leaves, spores, seeds, and a vascular system for water and nutrient transportation. As a result, they were limited to growing near coastlines and rivers. The discovered Calamophyton trees had started to evolve roots and vascular tissue in their stems, reaching heights of two to four meters with thin, hollow trunks.
The fossilized trees found in the ancient floodplain of Somerset provide valuable insights into the layout of the Devonian forest ecosystem. Unlike the taller trees in upstate New York, these Calamophytons were shorter and densely packed together, lacking any significant undergrowth. The forest floor was covered in twigs shed by the trees, which had a significant impact on the landscape. As these woody debris accumulated, they enriched the soil with organic matter, creating fertile ground for other plants to thrive. The surrounding network of rivers and seasonal floods shaped the land, with the trees evolving deeper roots to survive water scarcity.
