Cultivating Major Donors: Inside Look at VIP Events at the Democratic National Convention

Major Harris campaign donors are set to attend an array of VIP events at the Democratic National Convention this year, offering them a luxurious experience beyond just the convention’s headliner speeches. According to a schedule obtained by CNBC, these exclusive perks include private brunches, evening cocktail parties, and even a tour of Wrigley Field. The attendees, who are top donors to the Harris Victory Fund, a joint Democratic fundraising committee, have contributed around $900,000 each to support the campaign.

Donor parties have always been a significant part of presidential nominating conventions, providing campaigns with a crucial opportunity to establish relationships and show appreciation to individuals who donate substantial amounts to fund their activities. However, this year’s Democratic VIP donor events in Chicago seem to be more elaborate and festive compared to previous years. One reason for this heightened enthusiasm could be the pent-up energy resulting from the lack of in-person conventions since 2016.

On Tuesday morning, the VIP donors will gather for the first of several brunches at the Chicago History Museum, which is themed as a “Path to Victory Brunch and Briefing.” The following day, they will enjoy an exclusive tour of Wrigley Field, the historic home of the Chicago Cubs, where they can participate in batting practice, tours, concessions, and more. Before the nomination acceptance speech by Vice President Kamala Harris on Thursday night, donors will be treated to a reception at The Exchange, a distinguished historic restaurant.

While the VIP treatment is undoubtedly a highlight for major donors, it is just one aspect of a broader donor cultivation strategy that has been instrumental in Major Harris’ record-setting fundraising success. In July alone, following Biden’s endorsement, the Harris political operation raised an impressive $310 million, surpassing the contributions received by Republican former President Donald Trump. By the start of August, Harris had accumulated $377 million in cash on hand, significantly more than the Trump team’s $327 million.

As we observe the lavish VIP events and exclusive perks offered to major donors at the Democratic National Convention, it becomes evident that the cultivation of high-dollar contributors plays a crucial role in the success of political campaigns. The elaborate gatherings and luxurious experiences not only serve to express gratitude to generous donors but also contribute to building strong relationships and fostering continued support for the candidate. Ultimately, the strategic cultivation of major donors is a fundamental element in modern political fundraising, enabling candidates to finance their campaigns effectively and compete at the highest levels of national politics.
